Just curious — what is the difference between a Philharmonic orchestra (the Fresno Philharmonic) and a Symphony Orchestra (the San Francisco Symphony)?

My understanding is there’s no difference; the terms Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestra are interchangeable. They both mean a musical ensemble that is large enough to play a symphony. (As opposed to a chamber orchestra.)
